Subject: Mosquito Larvae

I'm trying to find information on their anatomy, especially the internal organs.

I've come up with nothing via Google. Can anyone suggest a useful Link?

Best wishes, David

In Google "Mosquito Larvae anatomy" brings up many sites(maybe 100s).

Ted-David,
A goggle Google for:
"Mosquito Larvae anatomy"
brought up nothing
"Mosquito Larvae" anatomy *78,700*
"Mosquito Larva" 15,500

Adding modifiers one at a time and in combination to the Google search:
"Mosquito Larvae"
Such as:
anatomy, atlas, image, images and pubic organizations as USDA, FDA, FAO & WHO
trim down the number of hits to number that is reasonable to look through. The public organizations weed out links that lead to junk and a lot of papers that require password access. If you are in a library that has on line access to journals, adding journal to the search string finds resources there.

Hello David,
Please check this info:
  ../MicGroup/Other/Mosquito/M1.htm
and let us know if it is helpful.

I have accumulated some images from light microscopes in both BF and DF modes, and also some SEM images, which may be interesting.

In the meantime, there is a Micscape article featuring some larva microscope images:
  ../MicGroup/Other/LL_M1.htm
but you may have already reviewed this info.

Best wishes from across the pond, Keith

Good Morning Keith.
Many thanks for the links.
The first one is just what I need. I had found the second one, but that didn't take me beyond what I could see with the stereo!

If you have time I'd like to see the images. my e-mail is g4ynd@...

Best wishes from a very wet East Anglia, David

David,
I'm pleased that you enjoyed the links.
I took some more time to add the appropriate source information, along with an illustration of the mosquito's life cycle per the Link above. The added Hildreth link, with the "first one", has some extra information and microscope images that may be of real interest.

It's a beautiful sunny day in MA - with some healthy mosquito specimens in the woods out back!

Regards, Keith

David,
I remembered from reading Robert Hooke's Micrographia that he had studied the mosquito larva (although he didn't call it out by this name). Here is the pertinent section of the book with his woodcut illustration:
 ../MicGroup/Other/Mosquito/Hooke.htm

It's a really delighful read, for instance:
"But to return to the more immediate consideration of our Gnat: We have in it an Instance, not usual or common, of a very strange amphibious creature, that being a creature that inhabits the Air, does yet produce a creature, that for some time lives in the water as a Fish, though afterward (which is as strange) it becomes an inhabitant of the Air, like its Sire, in the form of a Fly. And this, methinks, does prompt me to propose certain conjectures, as Queries, having not yet had sufficient opportunity and leisure to answer them my self from my own Experiments or Observations."

And here we are looking at the same "strange amphibious creature" under a microscope nearly 350 years later....

Enjoy, Keith

Dear Keith,
I've downloaded the whole Hooke text and image files from Project Gutenberg. Is there a (simple!) way to make the image files appear in the text as they did in the link you gave me?

And being very greedy, is there a way to read text with images as an e-book on my Ipaq?

Best wishes, David

David,
I'll work this one off-line (via email) with you.
I'm delighted that you are also enjoying Hooke's wonderful narrative.

In the meantime I have assembled some of the larva images, that I referred to earlier, for you.

Best regards, Keith

Additional Notes
